Years before Jackson Hole Mountain Resort was even a speck of an idea, local residents looked for easy ways to ski. In 1939, their wishes came true: Snow King opened with a rope tow.
Just a few blocks from Jackson’s famous town square, Snow King Resort is small but mighty. Three lifts and one surface tow serve a variety of terrain, including one run, Upper Exhibition, rumored to be the steepest inbounds run on the continent.
But Snow King isn’t about being steepest, fastest or biggest. The Town Hill, as locals call it, shows a great ski area isn’t about high-speed quads, luxury hotels and ski-in/ski-out dining. Snow King is about simplicity -- friends and families enjoying the thrill of sliding on snow.
“Snow King offers a little bit of everything without being crowded,” says Bill Briggs, founder of Snow King’s Great American Ski School and the first person to ski the Grand Teton (in 1971).
If the 60-degree sloped Upper Exhibition isn’t your style, try the Surface Tow or Rafferty lifts in the beginner area. Briggs’ favorite run green circle run is Kelly’s Alley. “It’s a pile of fun and has interesting and varied terrain,” he says.
Cougar and Elk, off of the Cougar chair, are two of Snow King’s most popular runs. Groomers keep the middle of these runs in nice shape while the sides are left untouched and form what Briggs calls, “gorgeous, friendly bumps.”
And then there is Upper Exhibition, which is not only steep, but also bumpy and has an unusual fall line. But that’s typical of Snow King’s double-black diamonds: terrain even the most seasoned skiers will find challenging.
Allowing skiers and snowboarders to challenge themselves as much as possible, Snow King is the only area resort open for night skiing (Tuesday through Saturday until 8 p.m.). The resort also sells two-hour tickets in addition to full- and half-day tickets. Factor in convenience to downtown Jackson and skiing at Snow King is hard to pass up
