Grand Targhee Ski & Summer Resort

It may not be the biggest resort in the area, but what Grand Targhee lacks in size it more than makes up for in snow. Annually, Targhee receives over 500 inches of Mother Nature’s best white stuff. If Jackson Hole gets a foot of powder, there’s no doubt Targhee will have twice that.

On the western side of the Tetons – you have to drive over Teton Pass to get there -- Targhee has 2,000 acres of terrain, four lifts and a family-friendly, low-key base area which includes most amenities found at bigger resorts.

“Plenty of intermediate terrain and a nice, inviting atmosphere make the trip to Grand Targhee worth including in any visit to Jackson Hole,” says Christina Shephard, a nine-year season pass holder at Targhee and manager at Yostmark Mountain Equipment.

Shephard recommends starting the day on Dreamcatcher Quad lift. It’s one of the few summit lifts in the country that accesses trails at all ski levels. The green circle Teton Vista Traverse from the top of Dreamcatcher is so picturesque it’s not uncommon to find more advanced skiers meandering their way down to soak in the views. Not that there is any shortage of intermediate or advanced runs: they come in a mix of open fields, lightly gladed areas and tricky gullies.

Chief Joseph Bowl is a not-to-be-missed classic. “It’s a relatively easy way down on varied, groomed terrain,” Shephard says. “Its gently sloping pitch provides skiers with a comfortable introduction to skiing at Grand Targhee.”

Although Targhee is primarily an intermediate mountain, advanced skiers have the Headwall, tree skiing off the Sacajawea Quad and the steep South Chutes.

Regardless of your ability level, it’s the fluffy, bountiful powder you will enjoy most at Targhee. The ski area seldom experiences the hardpacked, icy conditions that sometimes plague other resorts
